School swimming in the spotlight: Swim:ED featured by the BBC in Rotherham

It was great to see school swimming and water safety given national attention this week, with Swim:ED featured in BBC coverage from Rotherham.

The report looks at the challenges schools face in providing swimming lessons and highlights the importance of ensuring children have opportunities to develop essential swimming and water safety skills.

As part of the report, the BBC visited Rotherham to see Swim:ED in action, where a pop-up pool is bringing swimming lessons directly onto school grounds.

By bringing the pool onto the school site, pupils can take part in swimming lessons without travelling to an off-site leisure centre. This approach helps address practical challenges schools face around pool availability, transport, and time away from the classroom.

Ensuring children leave primary school with the skills and confidence to be safe in and around water is important, and it deserves to remain in the spotlight.
