Reflection: Birmingham Awards 2022: Finalists!

We’re delighted to reflect on when we were finalists in not just one but two categories at last year’s Birmingham Awards

The Birmingham Awards celebrate the individuals and organisations that make Birmingham the vibrant city it is, enabling it to flourish and thrive as Britain’s second city.

What awards are we up for?

Sporting Initiative of the Year

What’s the criteria for the award?

  • The award is presented to an organisation that works to continuously improve the quality of sport in any of its elements.
  • The award recognises the need to encourage people into sport.
  • The nominee must demonstrate that they have and encourage strong links between the community and sport.

How have we demonstrated this?

Since 2005, we’ve built our reputation on delivering high-quality services to engage children and young people in physical activity.

By continuously improving the quality of our sporting outputs, we’ve built links between the community and sport, impacting hundreds of thousands of children and young people. We work to rebuild physical education, physical activity and sport provision to ensure children have access to engaging, accessible and inclusive opportunities to be active. Through this provision, children are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, skills and tools to lead healthier and happier lives.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve engaged 70,000 children directly and 400,000 indirectly through our training and partner offer. We’ve worked with 216 schools and delivered 19,000 hours of activity provision.

Some of our highlights from the past 12 months include:

  • Winning the tender to deliver the Commonwealth Games 'Bring the Power' programme,  delivering in 65 Birmingham schools and inspiring 14,550 children in just eight weeks.
  • Operating at a record number 25 sites for our Ofsted registered school holiday programme.
  • Delivering the government’s Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme, providing 8,240 free meals.

Who wins is up to you! It would be an honour to have your vote. You can cast your vote here before 2nd October 2022.

Business of the Year

What are the criteria for the award?

  • Community involvement

How have we demonstrated this?

  • We formed strategic relationships with The Golf Foundation, England Athletics, the Chartered Institute of Management for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
  • We won the tender to deliver the Commonwealth Games 'Bring the Power' programme, delivering workshops that reflected the fully integrated para-sports programme of the Games. We ran the workshops in 65 Birmingham schools and engaged 14,550 children in eight weeks.
  • We introduced a wellbeing check-up programme for our team members to benchmark and track health, happiness and success.
  • We’ve invested in the financial wellbeing programme 'Your Y' to support our team.
  • Our innovative physically active learning programme, English on the Move (EOTM), develops children’s understanding and confidence in spelling, punctuation and grammar through movement.
