Birmingham 2026 Miles Challenge Featured by European Athletics

The Birmingham 2026 Miles Challenge has been featured by European Athletics, highlighting the growing momentum behind this inclusive, school-led initiative.

Developed in partnership with the London Marathon Foundation and Run:ED, the challenge is designed to support primary schools across Birmingham and the West Midlands in increasing participation in physical activity in the lead up to the European Athletics Championships 2026.

Part of something bigger

The feature reinforces the role the Miles Challenge plays within the wider Birmingham 2026 programme. It is not simply a standalone school initiative, but part of a broader ambition to inspire more children to be active and to connect communities to a major international sporting event taking place in their city.

For schools, this means more than just taking part in a challenge. It is an opportunity to:

• Engage all pupils in regular movement
• Build confidence through participation
• Create a shared goal across the school
• Connect pupils to a major athletics event

Designed for schools

One of the reasons the programme has gained strong interest is its simplicity.

The challenge is designed to fit within a busy school day, with an emphasis on inclusion and participation rather than performance. Schools can involve whole classes, track activity over time, and build momentum across the summer term.

Starting 6th May

With the challenge beginning on 6th May, schools are now preparing to take part.

Over the coming weeks, pupils will begin tracking their miles, contributing to a collective effort to get more children moving across the region.
