It's Cycle to School Week and we're shining a spotlight on one of the most exciting, community-driven ways to do it: the Bike Bus.

If you've never heard of a Bike Bus before, picture this: a joyful, music-filled, slow-rolling group of children, parents, and leaders cycling to school together along a set route. It's safe, it's social, and it's inspiring.

And best of all, you can start one at your school.

What's a Bike Bus?

A Bike Bus is a group ride to school, where children (and often their grown-ups) cycle together in a pack along a set route. Volunteers help lead and "tail" the ride to keep it safe and supportive. Think of it like a walking bus, but on two wheels!

It creates a safer and more visible presence on the road, builds children's confidence, and gives everyone a positive start to the school day.

See it in action: The Portland Bike Bus

For a dose of pure inspiration, check out this Bike Bus in Portland, Oregon, led by PE teacher Sam Balto. Their routes are joyful, inclusive, and bursting with community spirit, complete with tunes, flags, and the occasional appearance by local celebrities.

This is what a school commute can look like and it all starts with a few bikes, some enthusiasm, and a shared route.

Why it matters

At Aspire, we're passionate about helping children become safer, healthier, and more active every day. As a local Bikeability provider, we see firsthand how cycling builds confidence, coordination, and independence.

A Bike Bus adds something extra: a community.

Children feel part of something bigger. Parents feel reassured. Schools see improved attendance, punctuality, and community spirit.
